Decluttering the appliances found in your kitchen is the first step in assessing your kitchen needs. Find out which appliances you use on a daily basis. For the appliances and tools that you rarely use, it would be better to store them in your attic or storage room. Most of these appliances and tools are only used for special occasions or for preparing big meals for guests.

Storing kitchenware, such as big pots, and more specialized appliances like a fresh pasta maker in another area will free up some space on your countertop and kitchen cabinets, allowing you to move more freely and cook your meals more efficiently. When you have guests over for dinner, you can simply retrieve them.

Calculate the Total Frontage for Your Shelves and Drawers

When you’re preparing meals, every second counts, and an efficient workspace that has all its kitchenware and tools organized into subsections in cabinets can help you with time management. The precision applied to time management should also be applied to calculating the kitchen’s cabinet space.

Luckily, the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA), a not-for-profit trade association representing the kitchen and bath industry, has calculated the ideal shelf and drawer frontage for kitchens of varying sizes.

  • A frontage of 1,400 inches is recommended for small kitchens or kitchen spaces that are less than 150 square feet.

  • A frontage of 1,700 inches is recommended for a medium kitchen or kitchen spaces with a square footage of 151 to 350 square feet.

  • A frontage of 2,000 inches is recommended for a large kitchen or kitchen spaces that are greater than 350 square feet.
