Selecting the Right Countertop Material

Finding the right countertop isn’t always as easy as walking into the store and selecting one for its looks. You have to think about which surface will be right for your home. Each material has its own positives and negatives.

For example, quartz is an extremely strong material, and it is nonporous. This means that it’s resistant to bacteria as well as heat, water and stains. Quartz is easy to clean and comes in a variety of different patterns and shades. The downside to quartz, however, is that is can fade if continually exposed to sunlight. It also has visible seams.

Granite countertops, on the other hand, are also extremely strong and heat-, stain- and bacteria-resistant. As a natural stone, no two pieces are alike, and granite is available in a wide variety of colors, including white, brown, beige, black, red and blue. With granite countertops, you can utilize them for preparing meals since the surface is extremely smooth.

While there are also visible seams with granite, you can get pre-sealed countertops that do not require resealing on an annual basis. Not only does this make them more maintenance-free, it also reduces the chances of the granite splitting due to stress.

I'd give Granite Works six stars if it was an option. We updated the look of our kitchen by replacing dark granite countertops with a bright Cambria quartz--the cabinets and wall tile remained. We're astonished the crew removed the old counters without any of the wall tile breaking! Once we settled on our choice, the ordering, measuring and installation took a bit less than two weeks. Schedules were kept, and everyone we dealt with was efficient, quite punctual, and left everything basically neat. However, later in the day after the install, we found a small but obvious flaw in the stone in one spot that we felt needed to be addressed. Marco, who came to check it out, and Bruno agreed. Love, Love, Love this place!! First off, when I was searching for a company to do granite countertops for our kitchen, I reached out to several providers on Yelp. Granite Works was one of the first to respond, literally within a matter of hours. I am a busy person and didn't have time to go to their store in Rockville so I was able to do just about everything (including digitally sign the contract) over the internet. They sent over a great guy to do the measurements, and he even brought two samples of granite that my wife and I were considering. I would have liked to be able to write some sort of review for them because I heard they did good work. I was referred to them to have new counters installed in my kitchen. We went to their show room and my wife picked out a product she liked. They came and measured my kitchen counters, then nothing. A month later and we never heard anything from them. Text messages, e-mails, and phone calls have all gone unanswered. Never got a quote of any sort or any indication they were interested in doing the work.
