Framed vs. Frameless Cabinets: Which Is Best for You?

The style of your kitchen cabinets sets the tone for the entire space. Kitchen cabinets come in two styles: framed and frameless. Unframed cabinets lack an underframe or structure to hold the box while framed cabinets have one. However, their appearance and functionality are significantly different.

What Is a Framed Cabinet?

Framed cabinets, as the name implies, have a face frame that covers the front of the cabinet box. Framed cabinetry doors are attached to the face frame, giving the box more rigidity and resulting in a strong, sturdy cabinet. It’s most usually referred to as “classic” or “American” cabinetry.

Advantages of Framed Cabinetry

  • Strength and sturdiness – The solid wood face frame of framed cabinets serves to considerably reinforce the sidewalls to which they are fixed, which is an advantage that frameless cabinets lack.

  • More adaptable and customizable — Inset, standard and complete overlay options provide you with a wide range of design options for creating a unique look for your cabinetry.

What Is a Frameless Cabinet?

A frameless cabinet is exactly what it sounds like: one without a face frame. By removing the face frame, a frameless cabinet box allows for better accessibility and storage. Cabinet doors are linked to the side of the box without the need for a frame, creating a sleeker appearance. Most people refer to it as “contemporary” or “full access” cabinets.

Advantages of Frameless Cabinetry

  • More accessibility – Because there is no inside edge of a frame extending into the cabinet hole, there is more accessibility. This provides simpler access to the cabinet interior as well as a larger opening for plates and kitchenware.

  • More storage space – Because there is no face frame to create a lip around the cabinet openings, frameless cabinets make it much easier to store appliances.

  • Additional design and style versatility – Frameless cabinets can be used in both traditional and modern designs.

Frameless vs. Framed Cabinets: Which Is Best for You?

This choice is determined by your kitchen’s needs. Framing cabinets are useful in large kitchens with no need for extra space. Ornate hinges, wide door options and concealed hinges in glass cabinets make them a great choice for a traditional motif.

In a tiny kitchen, frameless cabinets are preferred. They have greater storage and a more modern look. There are no intermediate stiles to obstruct the way. So, if every inch counts, go frameless.
