Getting Rid of Hard Water Stains From Granite Countertops

Granite continues to grow in popularity as a kitchen and bathroom countertop choice for many homeowners simply because it strikes the balance between durability and beauty. That said, like most high-use surfaces in your home, it can get stained from exposure to liquids like hard water.

Today, we give you the lowdown on hard water stains on granite countertops and how you can remove them.

Hard Water Deposits on Granite

Granite is naturally porous, which is why a sealer is applied on the countertop surfaces before installation so it doesn’t absorb liquids too quickly. While it is not necessarily a bad quality, the porosity of granite becomes evident if certain liquids get absorbed after long periods, leaving behind stains.

Typical water stains tend to look darker or lighter in the area exposed to too much moisture. These often dry and evaporate, and can easily be removed using regular cleaning materials. Some stains, however, leave behind an etch, which can be tougher to remove. It is caused by mineral deposits left behind after hard water dries and evaporates, usually appearing as white rings around faucets.

Hard Stain Removal and Prevention

Preventing and minimizing hard water stain can preserve the aesthetic appeal of the natural stone. It must be treated with high-quality sealant occasionally to keep the surfaces from absorbing liquids. Every time you use the granite countertop, be sure to clean up any spills that occur as soon as possible.

In case hard water stains develop around the faucet or anywhere on your countertop, try scrubbing softly with a scouring pad. You can also use a razor blade to gently scrape off the mineral deposit. Wipe off the residue with a soft, damp cloth.
