How to Properly Clean Your Granite Countertop

Granite countertops are highly popular and recognized for their naturally irregular patterns that give off a unique sparkle and luster. They boost the visual appeal of any kitchen or bathroom design, but they’ll need proper care and maintenance to stay that way.

If you’ve recently had a kitchen or bathroom remodel with a brand-new granite countertop, you’re probably wondering how you can best clean and maintain it. Our team at Granite Works shares their insight:

Why Granite Countertops Need Proper TLC

Granite as a material is porous and is made up of various minerals including quartz and mica. It’s been used as a construction material for many centuries, but in recent decades it has become more popular in various kitchen designs.

Because of its porousness, sealant is used on granite countertops to protect its colors and patterns. But the countertop will need resealing depending on how often you use it, but it’s usually done at least once or twice a year. Over-application of the sealant may damage the surface, but with proper care and maintenance, your granite countertop won’t need to be resealed as often as it needs to be.

Cleaning Tips For Granite Countertops

When cleaning your granite countertop daily, here’s what you need to do:

  1. Mix warm water and dishwashing liquid in a bucket or your sink and apply with the microfiber cloth. Make sure your dishwashing liquid doesn’t contain citrus extracts, as the acid may damage your countertop!
  1. As you clean, make sure to rinse your cloth often with clean water so that you’re not just pushing the suds and grime around.
  1. Afterwards, dry the surface off with a fresh, dry microfiber cloth. This should be done quickly, or you could end up with water stains in the stone.

As you’re cleaning your countertop, be sure to avoid using generic stain removers, bleach, or even oxygenated bleach, especially if you have food or water stains on your granite countertop. This can worsen the stain; instead, refer to the manufacturer’s instructions to know which cleaning products to use and how the stains can be removed.
