Uneven base cabinets and kitchen flooring are a lot more common than you think. It’s not a safety issue; however, it’s something that needs to be addressed before installing new countertops.
Uneven base cabinets are typically found in older homes, where the foundations may have settled over time. It doesn’t present an immediate hazard. However, it could affect how you use countertop surfaces. For example, round objects would be rolling to the countertop edge and onto the floor. In extreme cases, the angle can be so pronounced that it becomes an eyesore.
The ideal solution – addressing foundation issues – may not be the most cost-effective one, particularly if the affected area is only a small part of the house. If you are getting new discount kitchen cabinets and are planning to install them on existing flooring, the cabinets can be leveled using shims. Shims are slim pieces of wood that are carefully measured to fill the gap created by the difference between the cabinet and sloping floor. Several pieces of shim are applied until the base cabinet is secure and level. In extreme cases, several pieces of shim may need to be stacked to get the right height.
If the cabinets are already secured and cannot be removed or if the slope isn’t affecting how you use the cabinets, another option to consider when getting new countertops is to level the top of the cabinets. The easiest and non-destructive way to do this is to apply shims to support the low side of the countertop. It’s important to always use a spirit level to check and recheck the countertop at all sides before pronouncing it as done. For best results, work with a kitchen remodeling professional.
