Long-Term Care and Maintenance for Granite Countertops

While granite is tough, it still requires cleaning and maintenance. In this post, your discount kitchen cabinets providers from Granite Works share care and maintenance tips for granite countertops.

Regular Cleaning

While granite can withstand spills, the stains left behind can be very difficult to remove if you let them settle on the surface for a long time. Use a microfiber cloth and some warm soapy water for basic cleaning; do this at least once a week to keep the granite surface looking good and stain-free.

We don’t recommend using abrasive cleaners or harsh chemicals for deeper stains. These can scratch, etch and pit the surface of the granite permanently and leave you with a noticeably scarred countertop. For oily and more permanent stains, we recommend using a cleaning poultice made from a cup of baking soda and five tablespoons of dish soap.

When to Seal Granite

Sealing is part of your regular granite maintenance and is usually done seasonally. Through a water test, you can tell if the granite countertop will need resealing soon. Splash a small amount of water on the surface; if it clumps into small beads, it’s still good. However, if the water doesn’t bead, your countertop will need resealing as the granite is slightly absorbing the water.

Finally, it’s important to inspect the entire countertop to make sure that it’s not shifting or cracking in place. If you see obvious signs of structural damage, it may be necessary to replace the granite countertop.
