Wear and Tear

The countertop is the most hardworking part of the kitchen, being used for food preparation and service, sometimes even as an informal dining area. Some countertop materials show signs of wear more than others. The following are some of the most common signs of wear and tear:

• Cracking and chipping. Countertop materials can be chipped or cracked by accumulated nicks and dents from knives and other kitchen tools. Some countertop materials can be sealed regularly to prevent cracking or chipping, but a severely damaged countertop will require replacement.
• Discoloration. Some countertop materials fade over time, even when regularly sealed. Discoloration may also indicate weakened material, which means it may preclude cracking or fissures getting bigger. Discoloration may also be caused by food stains, however, they can be removed using various cleaning methods.

Damage

Damage to countertops is typically caused by impact caused by a heavy object or thermal shock. The following signs, which can be more pronounced on cheap granite countertops, indicate the level of damage that requires countertop replacement.

• Water damage. Porous materials like natural marble can absorb water. Soft water, or water with low mineral levels, can pull minerals from stone. When marble absorbs soft water — such as condensation from a glass of water set on the countertop — it causes gradual degradation that results in growing fissures or a weakened countertop. Proper sealing can protect your countertop from water damage, but when damage sets in, it’s only a matter of time before you’ll need new ones.
• Widespread cracks. Placing a very hot pot or pan on a cold countertop surface can cause thermal shock. While some countertop materials are heat-resistant, others may become cracked from the sudden temperature change.
